Three-Story Timber Frame Barn
A.R. Brouwer Company was contracted by the Real Life Day Camp and Farm to design and build a 3-story timber frame barn. It began by demolishing the original barn, which had been built in a floodplain. Extensive site work was completed to raise the building pad. The barn was constructed with Douglas Fir heavy timbers, timber frame stairs and shiplap exterior siding. The third floor has 40’ clear span rafters to maintain an open room for indoor games. To keep with the “farm” theme, a unique 37’ high concrete stave silo was constructed to enclose the elevator shaft. The silo was fabricated in Wisconsin and erected on-site. The barn is home to numerous animals and a day camp for school-aged children. This project was featured in the Construction Association of Michigan Magazine in August 2016, Vol. 37.
